REDUCTION GEAR
2016 – MX-5 – Steering
REDUCTION GEAR
Purpose/ Function
-
The reduction gear decelerates the rotational motion input from the Electric Power Steering (EPS) motor and amplifies the rotational torque at the same time, and transmits it to the assist pinion.
Construction
-
The reduction gear is integrated with the steering gear and consists of the worm wheel located on the steering gear housing and the worm shaft connected to the EPS motor.
Operation
-
The assist torque generated by the EPS motor is transmitted to the worm wheel via the worm shaft which then drives the pinion shaft.
-
The EPS motor assist torque is amplified at the gear reduction ratio (21:1) between the worm shaft and worm wheel, and transmitted to the pinion shaft.
Fail-safe
-
Function not equipped.
