REAR SIDE RADAR SENSOR
REAR SIDE RADAR SENSOR

id151100006200
Purpose
-
― The blind spot monitoring (BSM) system
-
― The rear cross traffic alert (RCTA) system
-
― The smart brake support [rear crossing] (SBS-RC) system
Function
Target vehicle detection function
-
• The rear side radar sensor emits microwaves to the following area to detect an object in the blind-spot at the rear of the vehicle from the reflected microwaves.
-
Note
-
• The detection ability of the rear side radar sensor has limitations. In the following cases, the detection ability may lower and the system may not operate normally.
-
― The rear bumper near the rear side radar sensor has become deformed.― Snow, ice or mud adheres to the rear side radar sensor on the rear bumper.― Under bad weather conditions such as rain, snow and fog.
• Under the following conditions, the rear side radar sensor cannot detect target objects or it may be difficult to detect them.-
― Stationary objects on a road or a road side such as small, two-wheeled vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, animals, and shopping carts.― Vehicle shapes which do not reflect radar waves well such as empty trailers with a low vehicle height and sports cars.
• Turn off the system while pulling a trailer or while an accessory such as a bicycle carrier is installed to the rear of the vehicle. Otherwise, the radio waves emitted by the radar will be blocked causing the system to not operate normally. -
|
-
• The rear side radar sensor calculates the position, direction of vehicle travel, and relative speed of the detected object from the reflected microwaves.
|
Automatic configuration function
-
• When the ignition is switched ON (engine off or on) for the first time after the rear side radar sensor has been replaced, the rear side radar sensor reads the specification information sent via CAN communication from the body control module (BCM) and it performs automatic configuration.
Radar emission angle correction function
-
• The rear side radar sensor corrects deviations in the radar emission angles, caused by installation tolerances after related part replacement, by implementing the radar aiming procedure. For the radar aiming implementation timing and procedure, refer to the [FRONT SIDE/REAR SIDE RADAR SENSOR AIMING] in the workshop manual.

Operation
Object detection
-
• The rear side radar sensor emits 24 GHz radar waves from the transmitter integrated in the module, and receives the reflected radar waves using the multiple built-in receivers. The rear side radar sensor calculates the distance between the object and vehicle based on the time required to receive the reflected radar waves that were emitted, and it calculates the angle (horizontal angle) of the object with the vehicle based on the phase difference between the arriving reflected waves received by the multiple receivers.
