Blind spot monitoring (BSM)
-
• When the vehicle speed is more than 10 km/h {6.2 mph}, the blind spot monitoring (BSM) function launches and starts detecting approaching vehicles.• If an approaching vehicle is detected and enters the alert area or if an approaching vehicle is detected which will reach the front end of the alert area within setup time *1 the system warns. *1 :Set time can be switched to 5.5 sec, 3.5 sec, 1.5 sec using the center display• The rear side radar sensor changes the alert area according to the vehicle speed.
-
Warning 1
-
― If the system detects an approaching vehicle, it alerts the driver of the approaching vehicle by turning the blind spot monitoring (BSM) warning light on.
-
Warning 2
-
― If the system detects a turn switch signal on the side where an approaching vehicle exists while warning 1 is operated, it warns the driver by flashing the blind spot monitoring (BSM) warning light and activating the blind spot monitoring (BSM) warning buzzer.
-
System check
-
• When the ignition is switched ON (engine off or on), the system checks the conditions for approx. 3 sec. During the system check, the blind spot monitoring (BSM) warning light turns on, and turns off when the system check is finished. If a system malfunction is found, the i-ACTIVSENSE status symbol (amber) turns on.

Operation
-
Warning
-
• The blind spot monitoring (BSM) system assists the driver in confirming the area behind the vehicle when changing lanes. Because of the various restrictions in the system operations, a warning may not occur or it may be delayed even if there is a vehicle in an adjacent lane or at the vehicle rear. Do not rely completely on the system and always take responsibility as the driver in confirming the area behind the vehicle.
-
Caution
-
• In the following cases, the i-ACTIVSENSE warning indication/warning light turns on and operation of the system is stopped. If the i-ACTIVSENSE warning indication/warning light remains illuminated, have the vehicle inspected at an Authorized Mazda Dealer as soon as possible.
-
― Some problem with the system including the blind spot monitoring (BSM) warning indicator lights is detected.― A large deviation in the installation position of a rear side radar sensor on the vehicle has occurred.― There is a large accumulation of snow or ice on the rear bumper near a rear side radar sensor. Remove any snow, ice or mud on the rear bumper.― Driving on snow-covered roads for long periods.― The temperature near the rear side radar sensor becomes extremely hot due to driving for long periods on slopes during the summer.― The battery voltage has decreased.
• Under the following conditions, the rear side radar sensor cannot detect target objects or it may be difficult to detect them.-
― The rear bumper around the rear side radar sensor is deformed.― Radio wave interference from a radar sensor equipped on a nearby vehicle.― The approaching vehicle is any of the following shapes.
-
a. The size of the vehicle body is extremely small.b. The vehicle height is extremely low or high.c. A special type of vehicle with a complex shape.
― A vehicle is in the detection area at the rear in an adjacent driving lane but it does not approach. The blind spot monitoring (BSM) determines the condition based on radar detection data.― A vehicle is traveling alongside your vehicle at nearly the same speed for an extended period of time.― Vehicles approaching in the opposite direction.― A vehicle is in an adjacent lane on a road with extremely wide driving lanes. The detection area of the rear side radar sensor is set at the road width of expressways. -
• In the following case, the flashing of the blind spot monitoring (BSM) warning indicator light, and the activation of the warning sound and the warning screen indicator display may not occur or they may be delayed.-
― A vehicle makes a lane change from a driving lane two lanes over to an adjacent lane.― Driving on steep slopes.― Crossing the summit of a hill or mountain pass.― When there is a difference in the height between your driving lane and the adjacent lane.― Directly after the blind spot monitoring (BSM) system becomes enabled by changing the setting.
• If the road width is extremely narrow, vehicles two lanes over may be detected. The detection area of the rear side radar sensor is set according to the road width of expressways.• The blind spot monitoring (BSM) warning indicator light may turn on and the vehicle detection screen may be displayed in the display in reaction to stationary objects (guardrails, tunnels, sidewalks, and parked vehicles) on the road or the roadside.• A blind spot monitoring (BSM) warning indicator light may flash or the warning beep may be activated several times when making a turn at a city intersection.• Turn off the blind spot monitoring (BSM) while pulling a trailer or while an accessory such as a bicycle carrier is installed to the rear of the vehicle. Otherwise, the radar’s radio waves will be blocked causing the system to not operate normally.• In the following cases, it may be difficult to view the illumination/flashing of the blind spot monitoring (BSM) warning indicator lights equipped on the door mirrors.-
― Snow or ice is adhering to the door mirrors.― The front door glass is fogged or covered in snow, frost or dirt.
• The rear side radar sensor of the blind spot monitoring (BSM) may be regulated under the radio wave related laws of the country where the vehicle is driven, If this system is used abroad, it may be necessary to turn off the system.• The system switches to the Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) function when the shift lever (manual transmission) or the selector lever (automatic transmission) is shifted to the reverse (R) position. -
Blind spot monitoring (BSM) operation
-
• When all of the following conditions are met, the blind spot monitoring (BSM) function goes on stand-by.

If a vehicle is approaching on the left side
-
1. When the preconditions are met, the rear side radar sensor emits electromagnetic wave and starts detecting approaching vehicles.2. When the rear side radar sensor (LH) detects an approaching vehicle, it sends (1) the object information to the rear side radar sensor (RH).3. If the rear side radar sensor (RH) the determines the approaching vehicle is entering the alert area or will reach the front end of the alert area within setup time, it sends (2) a warning1 signal to the door-electrical supply unit,driver-side, the instrument cluster and active driving diaplay via the body control module (BCM).4. The instrument cluster displays the warning indication (3) in the active driving display and the active driving display displays the warning indication (3) on the windshield, and the door-electrical supply unit,driver-side turns the blind spot monitoring (BSM) warning light on (3) based on the warning1 signal.
-
If a vehicle is approaching on the right side
-
1. When the preconditions are met, the rear side radar sensor emits electromagnetic wave and starts detecting approaching vehicles.2. When the rear side radar sensor (RH) detecst an approaching vehicle, it sends (1) the object information to the body control module (BCM).3. When the rear side radar sensor (RH) detects an approaching vehicle, and determines the approaching vehicle is entering the alert area or will reach the front end of the alert area within the setup time, it sends (2) a warning1 signal to the door-electrical supply unit (passenger’s side), the instrument cluster and active driving display via the body control module (BCM).4. The instrument cluster displays the warning indication (3) in the multi-information display and the active driving display displays the warning indication (3) on the windshield, and the door-electrical supply unit (passenger’s side) turns the blind spot monitoring (BSM) warning light on (3) based on the warning1 signal.
